FAQs Regarding eGCC - Fall Network Upgrade

 Audience for this page

Helpdesk employees and others who are involved in employee and student support. The general information has been disseminated through the GCC Help page listed below. As you know there are a plethora of wiki pages regarding all of this stuff so we'd like to try and start out giving faculty something consise and if they need further assistance to give us a call or stop by. 99% of faculty should have what they need with the Help page. If there is something missing from that main gateway, we need to add it there.

FAQs

Q. I heard the entire system is completely new, where is all my old stuff?
A. There have been many back end upgrades over the summer but to the average user, most of the system appears very similar to the old system. Users who have stored files on the old system need to check theeGCC Guide to see if their files have been automatically transferred over or if they will have to do this themselves.

Q. When I logged into the new environment, my Favorites/address book from the old Palette was gone.
A. These files still exist and have been transferred into your new account space. To import your bookmarks into Internet Explorer, close IE, then simply copy all the files from H:\OLD_FILES\Favorites to H:\Favorites; re-open IE and all your favorites will be available.

To import your address book, copy the folder 'username.wab' (where 'username' is your actual username) to your H:\; then in Outlook Express, go to File > Import > Address Book. A
window will open so you can locate the address book file you wish to import, navigate to the location where you just saved your address book.  Click on that file and then click "Open."  A progress bar should appear, and once it is complete, your address book should have all of your old contact information! (thanks to Corey Oltman for assistnace in testing these directions)

Q. How do I change my eGCC password?
A. If you have forgotten your password, then you will need to scan your ID card at one of several eGCC (Palette) lookup stations on campus.  If you remember your password, you can go to the web based password change utility.

Q. Can I skip the prompt to change my password the first time I login?
A. Yes, if there is no "change password" box, please notify the Student or Employee Helpdesk with the username on the account.

Q. What software is available in eGCC?
A.  There is a list of software that is standard .

Q. I'm wondering about the status of a particular lab on campus, when will it be imaged or is it going to be imaged?
A. There is documentation on the wiki for labs that are scheduled to be imaged.

Q. Will Faculty be able to still use Netscape for email when their workstations are converted to the new environment?
A. Faculty should go through the normal software request procedure by emailing palette-request@student.gc.maricopa.edu. The standard suite of tools that all faculty will receive is still open for discussion, final decisions have not been made. Current standard suite of tools scheduled to be included.

Q. Can we still FTP?
A. FTP has been temporarily made available. The URL is:
ftp://files.gccaz.edu/
directory: /home/x/y/xyusername

FTP is an insecure protocol, we want to be secure in our new environment. Not all clients can support secure FTP.  WebDAV is secure, please encourage users to try this method, instructions are on the eGCC Guide pages. We will compile a list of recommended clients soon and post here.

Q. I am getting a roaming profile error.
A. There seem to be errors on some accounts that were created over the summer. The new student accounts are not expected to have the same problem. For a fix, please check the [eGCC Trouble Reporting] page.

Q. What do users need to do to see old Gecko files or copy old Glory files to the new Shared Drive.
A. Please check the eGCC Guide pages for step by step instructions.

Q. How much quota do I have in the new environment?
A.

Q. I am trying to access my files (home or shared) on a Macintosh from home and I cannot connect.
A.

Q. I am having difficulties storing Word files to my H: drive when working on a Macintosh.
A.

Q. I've read all this FAQ, I've asked questions, Why am I still confused?
A. You likely tried to get a straight answer from GCIS personnel.  Sometimes we speak too much Technobabble.  Sorry about that.  Try rephrasing your question, ask us to speak English, we'll take another shot at giving a comprehensible answer.

A request -- in the interests of precision, could we please use dates (Aug. 19th) in these updates, instead of "next week" or other relative designations?  It will help us all understand the timeline.  Thanks.

Well . . . if you'd like to say "next week," can we at least identify the week (8/14-8/18 or somesuch)?  Am I being too picky to point out that "next week" actually never arrives?  A bit like Zeno's paradox :-)  Aha, but maybe that's the point??

I'll tkae a look and see what I can do about more precise dates.
