File Restore Requests Done Correctly

From an email Oliver Baddeley sent to the Glogg list which I suggested he turn into a wiki page but has not yet.  He can come back and fine tune this.

To avoid excessive guess-work when restoring files from tape please provide full information.  Answer the following points as completely as you are able. Excess info is better than not enough.

What you need to do... An Example 'splain more please
1. Full path to folder/file and all files that need to be restored.
S:\Mydept\coolproj*.* Don't guess what the path is/was.  The back up software stores multiple copies of files from multiple folders across months of backups.   Give a full path that is known to work, this makes for an easier quicker task to perform.
2. Date(s) you'd like the restore to come from. On or before November 1st 2006
Without that date there are hundreds if not thousands of copies that can be restored.  Choose a date that you know your files were solid.  There is no sense in restoring corrupt files.
3. Info about what you've done with the current (corrupted / wrongly edited) file, and where you've moved it to and it's rename. The existing "coolproj" folder has been renamed "feb1coolproj".
It's the clients' or techs' job to move that file out of the way as anything being restored is going to go right back to its original location. There of course can be exceptions but they should be few and far. These files should be moved and renamed before calling in to have the restore done.  For instance, rename the existing folder to "today's date + folder name"

Copy this table into an email or a work order, substitute your specifics in the middle column then submit to the help desk to be assigned to the proper personnel (you technicians with WO access can assign it directly to the proper personnel).

If everyone follows these simple steps, restores can be done effectively and within a day of receiving the request.
If these steps are not performed, then there will be a lot of phone tagging and unsuccessful restores.
