I've started this page for those of us who attended the meeting to collect the great ideas and information that were shared at the meeting.
Pushpa organized the meeting to work on initiatives for the future as well as to share news of what is happening on the different campuses. She plans to set up a wiki for all the sustainability groups across the district to communicate.
Among the ideas discussed was the possibility of creating a Sustainability Certificate program at the community college level or designing an associates in science degree with an emphasis in sustainability. In order to do this, we'd like to identify the courses that ASU is counting towards its sustainability program and also which courses we have in the community colleges that would be appropriate for sustainability education.
Another district initiative would be to look into institutionalizing a recycling supervisor position at each college. Presently, ___________ College has funded a recycling coordinator at its college through a grant.
We thought of additional activities for our Focus the Nation Week. Would it be possible for the library to set up a shelf highlighting the books in our library focusing on sustainability?
Creating a new certificate program would probably be easier than proposing a new A.S. degree (academic degree) - unless you really mean an A.A.S. (an occupational degree). There are academic certificates but occupational ones are far more common - would the intent be for employability (occupational) or for knowledge in general (academic)? Once the district wiki is up, I'll probe for the same questions.
We do have a relatively new Instructional Council for Environmental Sciences - it is a mulitdisciplinary council (and the first of its kind for MCCCD): http://www.maricopa.edu/icinfo/members/icenv/icenv.php
so it would be appropriate to start by floating the ideas with IC members (and our Chris Miller is listed as an alternate member!)
