1.    Introductions with Pushpa Ramakrishna

CGC will be having their Teach In on Wednesday; Wed. evening is panel discussion instead of webcast, due to political leaders' availability/schedule.  Thurs. evening HEAT student group will be sponsoring a film showing (11th Hour or Running Dry).

EMC is just getting started with their planning.

April 10th will be MCCCD Sustainability Event (plan is to have an annual event, rotating locations around the valley).  This year at CGC, next year West Valley.

Graduation Pledge: pledge of social consciousness for new graduates. Students sign up on the web and receive green ribbon to wear at ceremony.  They pledge that when they enter the workplace, they will maintain a commitment to being mindful of the social and environmental consequences of their workplace/employer.  www.graduationpledge.org

Recycling committees are most common on other campuses - so perhaps a meeting of several colleges' committees might be worthwhile at some point.

Dumpster Dive - very popular event; sorting contents of dumpster. Feb. 20th at CGC; Composting workshop to follow soon after

Garbageland adopted as Faculty One Book (Dumpster Dive two weeks prior) at CGC in March

Maricopa Sustainability event April 20th

Asking/supporting request that Dr. Green sign the Presidents Climate Commitment http://www.presidentsclimatecommitment.org/html/commitment.php3 other colleges have already signed: CGC, Rio, & MCC.  Pushpa advises lining up help and commitment from faculty to continue support.  She also advises examining strategic goals for the college for opportunities to address sustainability.

AASHE Leadership Award - CGC received this - and Pushpa believes that we are getting ourselves in line to be able to apply for this award.

Mary Jane and Pushpa prompted discussion about release time for faculty to dedicate attention and effort to sustainability issues.  Pushpa is thinking of a meeting during the spring accountability week at district to discuss needs at each college, what needs to be done, and how best we can continue efforts. Aim for Wed afternoon (Jan. 9th).

Mary Jane will coordinate Scottsdale vendors.

Lena has contact list of student clubs.  Robert suggests talking to groups like S.T.E.M. Club.  Mentions the activities from the science teacher at Mesa.  Have students write out a concern about climate change and one thing they will do about it, and place in a box.  Sign Graduation pledge at the same time.  Pins -- ask for donations instead of selling. Clubs can pretty much do anything, as long as it informs people about Global Warming & sustainability.  Clubs should funnelideas back to the committee.  Lena says she will do her best to get the word out to the clubs.  All campus student govts. are meeting the evening of Jan. 7th to discuss Aramark, so Lena can bring up the recyclable issue.

Pushpa mentions projects that her campus adopts each year, such as Darfur this year.

Dolly suggests having her kids do the science experiments on Friday.  We need creativity.  Need students to talk on the panel on Friday.  Article in Az Rep Sunday before event.  Dolly asks about putting something out to local high schools?   We should see more PR from the administration, such as the sign on the corner, community newspapers, etc.

Mary says we should recruit faculty to spread the word on Jan. 4th.  We would like to get more speakers.  Concentrate our faculty on the Friday of the event.  Give the faculty examples of what they can be doing/talk about it.  Get the faculty to integrate the message into their classrooms after the event.  Jeff & staff will take care of set-up.

Meet early the week of accountability -- Monday morning at 8:00 on the 7th.  Want to get invitations out next week if possible.  Mary -- will come up with a 15-20 blurb we can give faculty on the Jan. 4th event.

Cancel lunch event on Thursday, and just relax together, then student events in afternoon.
