January 7, 2008 Meeting

Attending: Chris Miller, Robert Reavis, Christina Eide, Doris Velasco, Mary Jane Onnen, Mary Harris, Mark Floor, Erik Gergus, Christine Moore, Lee Ann Cone.

1.     Pornography links on our Wiki site.  Christine has deleted and will turn off the anonymous comments temporarily.  SHe will also look into adding "remove comment" permissions to Robert's account. 

a.      Webpage to supplement the wiki - need to follow up with Chrystie.  Christine will complete paperwork for official site and work with Robert and Chrystie. Wiki will continue for behind the scenes but webpage will be out face to the outside.

2.     Day of Learning Report & Thanks!

Lee Ann really enjoyed her session (and wants to take one of Mary's classes!).  Jean Bihn of Glendale Star suggested inviting high school students to help fill our seats.   Overall well received - some questions posed illustrate that many on campus still do not accept climate change as a fact.

3.     Focus the Nation - THREE weeks until event! - Updates

a.      A budget for Wed night dinner is being prepared, based on 200 per night and the free-range chicken with organic veggies.

b.     Review wiki lists & activities. Should we have 'chairs' to coordinate? Yes, we think we need coordinators for each aspect.

                                                  i.     Ask Alexa to possible take the lead? Student clubs/groups during week, including student lab computers for Vote and three Calculators.  Table tents/signage in HT Centers and Library with urls for voting.  Hopefully, club advisors could check out laptops for use in SU for club members to sponsor table promoting the online voting.  Tables with info and/or posters (for any group/vendor without representation - possibly have student groups  to monitor area).

                                               iii.     Vendors: Wednesday AND Thursday Mary Jane will be Go To Gal/Gopher for Wed morning. E.g. Cars vs. others

MJO has two car vendors (interested in both days).  She'll contact Chevy (heard SUV hybrid).  Enthusiastic response from Ford (MJO will ask to bring Escape (SUV)) and Toyota.  Hasn't heard back from Honda yet.  Choice of dealers based on connections to college (students employed, programs, etc.).  MH still waiting on hydrogen car; she'll follow up via email.  MJO also tried contacting green dealer in Mesa.

                                              iv.     Wednesday Evening - Robert will coordinate. Seating choices

multiple screens - round tables (esp. with food being served).  Ch will doublecheck that tech support will remain throughout event (or can we ask for Joseph Droit to be sure to attend?).  Robert will check about url, etc., for webcast.  Need facilitator at computer for submitting questions on behalf of our group. 

                                                v.     Thursday morning talks -Mary Harris will be coordinator.  Mark will be Go To Guy/Gopher for Thurs morning. Ride for Melanie Lenart? MH working on getting guy from UofA to come up, too, so perhaps he can bring Melanie with him.  MH says Melanie thought she might get a ride up to Phoenix.  MJO might be able to provide ride back to Tucson; Robert might also be available.

                                              vi.     Thursday evening guests & Students to ask questions - Christine & Christina will coordinate. Seating choices

Mayor of Buckeye confirmed; Jackie Thrasher definite maybe; Glendale waiting to decide about sending elected official or city staff.  Invite students to have a voice and pose questions; prepare in advance.  Jean Bihn suggested inviting the Glendale Star publisher to participate on the panel.

                                             vii.     Friday AM schedule. Erik will coordinate. Mary Jane will be Go To Gal/Gopher for morning. GCC Faculty speakers

                                           viii.     Friday lunch - How to Move Ahead; Ideas? Grants!

                                              ix.     Music? For all event times, Christina Eide will be asking at Perf Arts faculty meeting today (1/7) at 11am about what groups may be interested/available.

c.      Publicity

MJO will talk to Mike Mullin, The Voice advisor, about reporting coverage. 

General announcement to Faculty, prepare assignments associated with Event

MH will start sending out Green Tips of the Day (with countdown to FtN event) 

d. Signage - Mark Floor will coordinate signage (MJO will talk to Ken Bus about signs for the film showings).

Need to submit requests to Media asap.  Robert has already talked to Dolly about sandwich boards.   

4.     Before event: The Eleventh Hour: SU 104E (holds 190)

Critical to publicize in advance - credit International Student Office with Green Efforts.  We'll advertise film showings as pre-event on our webpage; Christine will create campus calendar listings.

5. Next meeting: Friday, January 11th, at 3:30pm.  HT2-124 (Faculty Connection Center). Chris will ask students to attend.

  • Monday-Friday: Jan. 28-Feb. 1 - student voting online
  • Wednesday evening: 2% Solution webcast and discussion
    • Dinner 5:30, Round Table Seating 
    • Webcast Live at 8PM EST/6 PM at GCC
    • Immediate discussion to follow: Faculty/Student panel?
  • Thursday:
    • Guest speakers: 9:00-12:00 / Lunch - Organic food options (potato bar)
    • Afternoon Student Groups & Vendors (9AM - 2 PM?)
    • Dinner 5:30, Round Table Seating
    • Panel Discussion with Student Questions
  • Friday:
    • 9:00-Noon GCC speakers & student activities
    • Noon/Lunch: Roundtable discussion and Action Plans
    • 2:00 STEM sponsored film
      Activities for Focus the Nation:

-        Carbon footprint calculator and two others

-        Individual cards in box and/or videos. Could be linked to drawing/prize:

o      One personal concern about climate change & One personal action

o      Questions for Panel

List of Items for Campus to Do/Change:

  • Recycle much more
  • Raise room temperature in summer, early fall; lower room temperature in winter - to Better match the outdoor temperature / Request faculty & students dress appropriately
  • Encourage alternative transportation - bus passes, bike paths/racks
  • Discourage single-person car transport - Semester charge for parking ($5); use these funds for alternatives (bike paths on campus/solar panels)
  • Local and/or organic food offering by cafeteria e.g. daily special
  • Carbon inventory of campus and examine ways to reduce
