Last meeting: grant application - request that we cut amount and just go for the recycling; Chuck confirmed that the compactor purchase has been removed from the grant request (but containers and staff time/person still included) and app will be submitted tomorrow (March 6th).  Diversification of existing program is being emphasis in the grant narrative, as are education elements (signage, the planner, and events like Focus the Nation).  Chuck will report to executive leadership that grant was submitted (they will not have had any input on the submission).

Faculty Senate moved to change our status to standing committee.  This will help with infrastructure portion of President's Climate Commitment.  Chuck suggests looking this list from perspective of Return on Investment and cost savings. Include Regis as member of standing committee (impact on contracts).

Tammi from MCC (Recyling Coordinator) is willing to come to GCC on a Friday (first Fri of April?) to talk about their program and about organizing a dumpster dive.

Regis has done research for Chuck about Pepsico machines - but they (Pepsico) would want us to purchase the containers for recycling (at $250 per container).  Follow-up questions: will they pay us for the contents?  Will they pick up?   [Chuck's back up plan is to have custodian to pick up and empty into co-mingled recycling for City of Glendale to pick up.]

Automotive (Greg or someone) do they recycle the oil?  Do we pay a fee for removal?  What about scrap metal?  Any credits being earned for disposal?

Also inquire about Stauffers for what GCC materials have been repurposed?  To capture

Institutionalizing sustainability - what about getting release time for keep moving this forward planfully.  What has come of the district conversation from January about doing this districtwide? need to follow-up with Pushpa] Chuck suggests looking at sister colleges for model (for standing committee, release time)  Another idea: Ask for a district wide policy on meeting times to be between 9:30 and 3:30.

Encouraging Maricopa Learns Through Service Program for staff involved with us; and MCLI/FPG opportunities for faculty.

For Standing Committee application: process and product for category.

Next meeting: Meet March 26th 4pm - main focus will be Earth Day and dumpster dive (Robert will invite Tammi from MCC)

Hi everybody.  Below you will find Tammi's reply to my question about her position at MCC that I sent her before the Holidays.  This should give you a little background before she comes to visit.       [MarkHello], Mark

Pleasure to meet you and great to see people on other campus' taking
initiatives to be Greener. I love it!

Basically, my position is grant-funded by ADEQ. Go here to view the
grant info: http://www.azdeq.gov/environ/waste/solid/funding.html

A geography professor here applied for the grant because he had taken
over the program to expand it. So he applied for this grant. Got $46k.
And the college has to match. And he wrote into the grant a position for
one Recycling Coordinator and 2 Recycling Collectors which the
Coordinator supervises along with the faculty & student volunteers. So I
just interviewed, chose and hired an Collector. I will assign him daily
tasks to pick up recycling with a Golf cart we have here specifically
for Recycling, incidentally which was funded by Maintenance from funds
they made while recycling cardboard & white paper through a private company.

We have student & employee volunteers already emptying bins into barrels
all over campus but not every building is served. It's my job to get
every building with a volunteer or serviced by the Collector. I still
have to assess if we'll require a 2nd collector which I'll know after
the current one starts and gets into a routine. There's tons more but I
really don't have the time at this moment to cover everything.

In a nutshell:
*Coordinate events/awareness campaigns

It's alot to cover and if you'd like to meet for lunch, I can share with
more with you or like I said if you can get it approved, you're welcome
to shadow me. I did that with SCC. You'll want to talk with Thomas
Williams from SCC as he's doing great things over there as well. Thomas
is doing this as well as his normal position which is too much work for
one person, really.

It's our intention to form an alliance with all the MCCD schools for one
uniform Green initiative and you're welcome to join us. I'm copying
Thomas so he can email you when we plan to meet.

Again, nice to meet you and let me know if I can be of further
assistance. It'd be great to have R.C.'s or even a more broader
Sustainability Coordinator at each school but you have to start somewhere.

Hope this helps. Contact me anytime.

Warm Regards,
Tammi
