Updating Speaker Schedule
Mary will be contacting major speakers for filling out Thurs schedule and we'll shift GCC presenters to Friday.
Mary Jane will approach Automotive faculty about demo and/or presentation. If that doesn't work out, she contact auto dealerships with hybrid models (only after checking with Jeff Glemba about insurance, etc., for bringing vendors and vehicles on campus). Steve noted that a car display would be a great attention getter as well as a media draw. Maybe schedule for Wed. to get the word out for Thurs (and Fri) events? update: I contacted Jeff and received the insurance form. I also spoke to Jay Covey, who recommended that I try to get a technician to come with a car rather than a salesman. He said that he would be interested in bringing his students to the car exhibit since he is not an expert on hybrid cars. I plan to contact car dealers over break. 12/4/08
Briefly Noted:
Mary and Robert acknowledged overlapping of contacts with ASU.
Jeanne mentioned that TerraCycle, Inc.
will recycle plastic bottles for fundraising - Student Govt interested. Company pays for shipping bottles to them. ASG would like to get all the other clubs in on this. Water and soda bottles.
Linda Austin has been 'chatted up' about presenting - she assigns her English classes environmental topics. (both Leeann and Robert have spoken with Linda)
Faculty Senate has approved $1,000 - this will be used to provide refreshments at the Thurs evening community event (panel discussion).
Wednesday Webcast (evening)
Food costs to be sponsored by book publisher (name of company??). Aaron of Aramark will be working up a menu. (5:30pm food, 6pm webcast)
We need to specify room set up - theater style? tables?
Al Gonzales info:
Explained that historically GCC has only recycled white paper ("clean" paper) paying disposal fee to Weyerhauser - and shredded paper.
Decrease number of waste streams we use - comingle recycled products - in conversation with City of Glendale. City (has fees attached for pick up but not for dumping) would pick up from one large dumpster. Cut tons of disposal, operational costs. Once we have initial cost (there are start up fees: we need to get ourown compactor -but costs would amortize; buy our own canister; cut waste streams (less "pulls"). We can save money (we can't make money). Institutionalize pieces well-pieced together to cut operational costs (someone to manage program as part of job duties). Would not necessarily prohibit students from collecting for fundraising purposes. The person who brings the comingled recyclables will be responsible for removing non-recyclables (will be written into job description). Shredded paper will not be part of this plan. $64,000 to start up (including the compactor - which is separate from the container). The City is ready to go; we need something to dump into. Need a person (thinking temp-hire - but prefer at least an OYO); need something outdoor suitable (a substantial investment to at least get started). Marie is doing a lot of the brain work here, but Al and she meet regularly on progress of this planning.
Marie mentioned that key locations have been identified (where students congregate, etc.). Could we ask groups, individuals, alumni to sponsor recycling bins? Steve suggested getting locations noted on campus map. Also suggested: signage to educate what goes into recycling bins (signs made by Maricopa Skills Center or our own Media Services?)
Al had hoped for starting spring semester, but not likely; although Chuck is planning to make this announcement. Snags like identifying what company that will sell us a compactor (most companies prefer to lease).
Al can arrange for tour of City of Glendale recycling facility (manager: Marie has her name; she reports to Bill Sterling, Superintendent of Solid Waste); maybe ask Media to see if they could video a tour? Ask her to come to speak to campus?
Al agreed to attend community event on Jan. 31st at 6pm
Leeann Updates:
Leeann attended MCC Dumpster Dive and talked with ADEQ person (Laura ___? main spokesperson). Grant cycle for next year: book will come out in Jan; workshops in Feb; accepting proposals in April for next fiscal year (July-08 through June-09).
She has emailed Judy Sanchez about the parameters for donors.
She's made contact with Glendale Star (yesterday) and the Arizona Republic will be doing an article. At Mary Jane's suggestions, she will look into contacting Peoria paper.
The next Administrative Services & Planning newsletter will feature the Green Efforts committee as well as our Focus the Nation events.
Trip Reduction: Leeann has contacted Chad and Donna at District and was encouraged to contact Valley Metro. Maybe have a booth with take aways?
Not successful (yet) contacting APS nor SRP.
Campus Publicity:
For web presence, we'd like to have three links for awareness for the week: student voting via Focus the Nation, our Focus the Nation event details, and Consumer Consequences. How can we get this on the GCC front page? Best option is placement on the campus calendar, but not sure how info posted there populates the front page.
Ask Suzanne Higgins how we get info on the electronic marquee.
Robert reported that ___ was encountering a little confusion about contact for notice posting on Gaucho TV. Christine said that Joe Ranus is filling in for Scott Kozak (while he's out on medical leave).
I have contacted aka Green http://www.akagreen.com/
; about coming to set up an informational booth on Thursday. They are the valley's leading supplier of eco-friendly building materials.
