The FCC has agreed to do a session for faculty during the week of accountability.  Here are the plans:

We are set for Wednesday, August 16 from Noon - 2 pm.  Jean Ann will provide "light finger food" as an enticement!  We need to provide content!  This will be advertised with the title of:  Best Practices and Strategies for Student Learning and Success  The location is still to be determined-the SU may not be available.  We may be using the Phy Sci lobby-do we want to consider using HT2??

Jean Ann has also agreed to investigate the possibility of a speaker from the League of Innovationbut I really don't think that is likely to happen.  Let's scotch this.

There is also the committment of $1,000 to provide notebooks binders for everyone.

Now to the topics we discussed  (others may feel free to add to this as I can't find my notes at this moment  Found them!)

I think using HT2 is a good idea.  We can set it up like a poster session with people moving from pod to pod for different activities.  I think I'd have two BB and two MIDAS sessions, one intro and one advanced for each.  I also suggest one basic and one advanced palette tool sessions.  We could also offer a Jabber poster (GCC's own instant messaging server).  That's ten poster sessions, a good offering.  Now we just have to get people!  When we used posters in January, people really liked them.  They can be set up in [PowerPoint], and the LMC can print them on posters.

Actually, people might like to know how to create the posters too.   I can see how they might be used in a class with students.

I added a page about perhaps creating a FCC Teaching and Learning water bottle label.  What do you think?

Posted by Karen Schwalm at May 05, 2006 18:15 | Permalink

I like this idea (and had thought of suggesting it at our meeting).  When we did this at the library a year or so ago, we received many favorable comments.  Where is the page about creating them?  ;)I'm still getting to know this site.  I'm willing to volunteer affixing the labels if someone of greater talent creates the labels (I did all the library ones myself at home).

If you scroll up the page from this comment, you'll see that the water bottle page is listed under "Children."

Or you could scroll up and go to Browse Space.  It should show up in the "tree" once you expand it all.  However, I will also add water-bottle as a search term.  The you could scroll up and use the search box at the top of the page.

Much to my surprise, I had already created the link to waterbottle.

I talked to Jim Reed about a session.  He was very enthusiastic.  Could we get a mailing list together to keep these people informed over the summer?

Posted by James Abraham at May 08, 2006 10:37 | Permalink

I've just added you and Jim Reed to the FCC distribution list.  As I hear from others, I'll add them too--Good idea.

Could we call them binders?  I get a different idea from notebook.

Posted by James Abraham at May 08, 2006 11:31 | Permalink

Karen and all,

I would also like to talk about the new virtual media titles service or Video on Demand (VOD) via our catalog which we are piloting.

Posted by Frank Gonzalez at May 09, 2006 18:42 | Permalink

That would be great, Frank.  Can we get access to a database of available films?  I'll see if I can work up an example of an assignment that works off of one of the short segments of the films we have in the pilot.

I spoke to Susan High about doing a session. They are no longer doing the Early Warning stuff, but she was willing to work on a session that would revolve around Strategies for Referring Students when they are in need of help in various ways.

I'm putting through a software request for the purchase of Camtasia and Snagit for the FCC from July funds.  Do any of you MAC users know if we need an equivalent program or will resident programs work as well.  (See Karen Schwalm's note under poster sessions.)

I found this list of screen capture utilities for Mac users, but it looks to me as if there are also built-in features of the Mac OS that will do screen captures (Command-Shift-3 and Command-Shift-4).  Of course there are commands like this in Windows too, but [SnagIt] does more.   Anyone use anything on the list?

Two Questions:

  1. What is the difference between the two tasklists found as children of this current page (this page being "Planning for week of accountability session"):
  2. It seems as if both tasklists essentially have the same items, though the Poster Session Planning one seems to have two items checked off. Should we use the Poster Session Planning link to indicate when we have finished preparing our materials (e.g., we've sent our posters and handouts to the appointed people for printing)?
Posted by Crystie Lopez at Aug 02, 2006 10:18 | Permalink

The two task lists were created at different times.  The second one, on the Poster Session Planning page, I found after I created the first one.    But the list on this page was really set up to check whether the members of the committee had contacted presenters.

I would check off your session on the Poster Session Planning page (as Marla and I have done) when you're done!  Note that you can easily delete and add sessions (if you want to modify your title, etc.) on that version without editing the whole page.  Sorry about the confusion.
