  RSS feeds from a wiki

If you aren't interested in checking back in the wiki periodically, there are a number of ways you can be notified of changes to content in all or one of the spaces. One way is to set up an RSS Feed using the [FeedBuilder] link on the wiki Dashboard. Here's how I did it.

  1. I downloaded an RSS reader. There are lots to choose from. Do a Google Search for RSS reader and pick one. I have used Bloglines, Pluck and now SharpReader. I like ones that sit in my System Tray. (If you have a preference, weigh in with a comment below!)
  2. Go to the Dashboard by using the breadcrumbs at the top left of the wiki page. At the bottom of the screen, use the Feedbuilder to identify the specific wiki changes you'd like to track. For example, if you want to follow the changes to the Organization pages, including any comments, select [LearningSpace] in the first box and type in the label "organization." For Step 2, I selected Anonymous and gave the feed a specific name, "Wiki Organization."
  3. Click on Create RSS Feed.
  4. When the RSS Feed Created page appears, drag the icon onto the Address bar of your feed reader.
  5. Most Feedreaders allow you to set the update interval and provide some kind of notification signal (graphic or aural or both) when there is a new item.

Pluck is my favourite RSS feeder. I haven't used Sharp Reader yet.

Additionally, for Thunderbird and Forefox users, you can get the feed directly in your email inbox and/or as a bookmarklet on the browser.

I have been unable to get the RSS Feed from the wiki to work in Pluck and in Bloglines.  I have been able to get it to work in [SharpReader].  Any suggestions?

Hmmm. It works fine in Thunderbird. I'll take a look at Pluck later today and see what I can find out. Karen- what RSS format are you using? 1.0, 2.0, Atom?--RSS

I was using the default, 2.0.  I never thought about changing it.  The error message I get says that it expects a semicolon that is missing.  I'll try changing the RSS format.

Have you all figured out how to make an RSS feed from Confluence that works with Bloglines?  In my copy of Confluence, creating an RSS feed creates a URL like the one below.  I can drag this into a Thunderbird "add feed" window and it seems to work fine, but cutting and pasting it into a Bloglines "add feed" box gets "No RSS feed was found".

Hi Mitch.

Short form- it needs to be an ATOM feed, not RSS. Confluence message headers don't follow the usual RSS protocol and Bloglines reads it differently.

Additionally, bloglines doesn't support authenticated feeds, so you'll need to make sure you're not trying to make a feed requiring a username/password combination

Indeed, ATOM and anonymous works with Bloglines.  I was able to create the feed on the Dashboard, add a new feed in Bloglines, and then drag the monstrously long URL into the subscribe box. Thanks, Roger!

Thanks for the hints.  Right now our wiki doesn't support anonymous reads, so I will have to talk to our sysadmin.

Well, if you're using a mail client like Thunderbird, you can certainly have an authenticated RSS feed into that- That is actually the primary way I get the updates- rather than my bloglines account.

For T-bird, you want to use RSS1.0 (since Thunderbird does weird things to the ATOM feed) and designate that you'll use authentication.

Hi,

Sorry for the lack of brain power, but I just can't figure out how to get my Confluence RSS feeds to work.  I have Confluence 2.2 Build #512 and Thunderbird 1.5.0.7.  For my other RSS feeds, I simply right click on a button or hyperlink, and use Copy Shortcut (I am using IE).  I then click on the Manage Subscriptions link in Tbird, paste, then it works.

Can you provide a step by step guide for how to do this with Confluence?  We are using authentication in our environment.

Thanks in Advance!

David

By the way, I am getting " ... not a valid RSS feed." as the error message.  I have tried RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and Atom.
