h1. *HT1-118 Network Operations Center (NOC) - Remodel Project Plan*
*Scope:* This Remodel Project Plan will list the current developments and maintain future design decisions related to the reclamation of these spaces. Wish list items may also appear as a way to further develop and inspire improvement. Such wish list items will be labeled.

| 9/1/06 | The following developments were communicated via email by KC:
* Herman is working with Walsh Bros. to move the steel case furniture from the area formally known as the programmers in HT1-118 to the Help Desk and Technician's area in A-56. He estimates that can be accomplished within the next 2 weeks.
* Once the furniture is moved, the employees in the War Room, HT2-149 will move to the A building. That classroom will then be cleaned, the original furniture installed and the computers replaced. The computers will be imaged with a New World image, and the monitors will be upgraded to 17" LCDs. The goal is to have this complete by Friday, Sept 22.
* OIT will continue to empty out the rooms that will become Network Operations. Much will go the way of the trash can, and the computer room will be temporarily reconfigured for the 3 Computer Operations staff members. The goal is to have HT1-118, HT1-119, HT1-120 and 121 empty and ready for a face lift by Sept 22.
* Requisition 375523 has been submitted and approved for the reconfiguration of the fire suppression system in the new open area. |
... | 8/9/06 | Issues were identified with the removal of the wall and the existing halon system. Other fire suppresion methods will be investigated to accomodate the new structure and configuration of the room. |
| 8/4/06 | Today was the deadline for occupants of the War Room (HT2-149) to move into an alternative space so that TED could begin scheduling training sessions in the classroom, and so that remodeling could continue on HT1-118. However, the alternative space is not ready to occupy, per Chuck Jeffery. KC and Chuck will be exploring other alternative spaces for the Network Team and will relay updated information regarding move dates, etc. |
| 8/4/06 | The initial quote from Walsh Bros. came in too high. The CFS req was rejected by VP Sherman and the furniture will need to be re-spec'd and requoted to accomodate the budget. |
| 8/3/06 | The glass & metal wall separating the old Programmer's area from the Operations area is down\! Thanks Al Gonzalez and the M&O Team\! The next step will be finishing the edging (where the wall was removed) and laying down carpet squares throughout the space (over the floor tiles) to match. |
| 7/5/06 | Furniture order paperwork submitted to Procurement (Lori as contact) for requisition processing. |
| 6/22/06 | Met with Dawn and Bruce from Walsh Bros. Sandy and Herman were in attendance as well. Sandy will put together a design proposal that incorporates the following new furniture requests: \\
\- Two quad cubicle units w/ 54" high glass partitions \\
\- Modular tables for situation area that can raise/lower \\
\- Bookshelves and lockable storage bins for back perimeter wall \\
\- 1 Manager's desk, filing, storage solutions for office #1 \\
\- 2 Lead desks, filing, storage solutions for office #2 \\
Sandy's proposal will be available by Wednesday 6/28 for review. |

It was understood that KC and Al may have already spoken about the issue; and that KC had a mock up CAD drawing done of the HT1-118 area with the wall gone. Based on the drawing, it was understood that removing the one wall was the only major change scheduled to happen, per KC. |

*Rationale:* The HT1-118 Network Operations area and adjacent Programmer's offices are 20 years old. The furniture and work spaces have become outdated and cluttered, restricting communication, cooperation, and productivity among employees. The focus of the area has been changing, and with the onset of the New Student System, the change in the next year will be dramatic. The college is quickly phasing out VAX production and desperately needs a Network Operations Center.
Additionally, due to inflexible furniture configuration and poor space utilization, employees that should retain office space in these areas have been housed in other buildings across campus. This cloistered space situation has disconnected workflow and adversely affected productivity relating to campus network design and operations/production needs.
Workgroup collaboration and functional change for the employees residing in these areas can be attained through a threefold process of:
* joining both work areas into one space
* updating the furniture configuration
* and incorporating a "situation room" staging area.
These key aspects of the remodel plan will allow the necessary employees to interact on a daily basis thereby increasing communication, cooperation and productivity. The functional workgroups of these employees will no longer be segregated or defined by space restrictions. These functional workgroups have been identified as the Client Information Systems (CIS) workgroup and the Systems Architecture and Engineering (SAE) workgroup.
In addition to improving employee workspace and collaboration, the Remodel will create and expand methods of network monitoring and mass user (customer) communication. Through modified ceiling/lighting fixtures and public facing displays that are continually updated with current network information, passersby can consult the status and condition of their most frequently used network service.
*Budget:* Vice President Sherman will identify funding for this project. |
